Meet the Crew

Our present master is an experienced captain from an agricultural area of the Philippines and we are fortunate to have him as a perfect match for leadership on board the Flying Angel. Jumei is the picture of health and wholeness.  After a hard day of work he finds renewal by jogging around the port even during the summer.

Deonis Makene has been on the Flying Angel since May 24, 2007 making him the longest serving crew member. He heard of the Flying Angel through his friendship with Stephen Miller whom he met in 2004 at the Dubai Seafarers Centre. Makene is from Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania where he is building a new home for his family. His wife Sarah works in a furniture store to supplement their income.

Recently a group of Muslims on the floating jetty were looking for a place to pray and have Ishtar during Ramadan and Hendrivo (aka Rivo) suggested meeting on the top deck of the Flying Angel.  Rivo not only looks after the engine room, but also the welfare of seafarers.

The most recent addition to the crew is Renada who serves as our AB Cook. “AB” means able bodied seafarer, and Amancio is responsible for a variety of tasks.  He is on deck to tie up the boat at port and during visits to the bunker barges in the anchorage. He maintains the cleanliness of the Flying Angel and greets visitors when they come on board.

Thomas began work on the M.V. Flying Angel on the 12th of April in 2007 and will leave us this month as the longest serving member of the crew. He was 21 years old when he arrived from Kerala and his starting salary was $500 a month. The amazing fact about Thomas was that his responsibilities increased not only as general purpose cook, but as manager of the store.
